The walnut is a classic edible nut coming from the walnut tree it is part of the Family Juglandaceae. The tree itself has many varieties but grows up to 100 feet tall and has a spread of 70 feet and they live on average about 100 years. The nut itself is contained in a soft green fruit which will only release the nut when ripe. The wood from the tree is very durable and so we use it to build furniture with. Walnuts are also called Juglans (the Nuts of Jupiter).
We use walnuts of course in cooking for a great many recipes and confectionery for example Nocino is a liqueur made from unripe green walnuts steeped in alcohol with syrup added and Walnut oil is available commercially and is chiefly used as a food ingredient particularly in salad dressings. Walnuts are a nutrient dense source of plant-based protein and fats. They are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenol antioxidants, B-vitamins, Vitamin E, manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, selenium. Studies suggest that eating walnuts daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, provided the entire diet remains within recommendations for general nutrient intake.
Magickally Walnut wood makes wonderful wands and staves for those who use their wand or staff for weather working, abundance, insight, healing, focus, wealth, creativity and motivation. Walnut wood also makes excellent rune stones and spirit boards.
Crack open a walnut. Break the meat in half. Put the one half back in the walnut. Write on a piece of paper what you desire “I attract more money” or maybe “everyday I become more beautiful”. Fold the piece of paper and put it in the walnut too. Close the walnut and wrap it with red cord. Seal it with red wax too. Eat the other half of the meat while you inscribe outside the walnut “to grow” Your wish becomes one with you. You can bury the walnut or carry it with you.
