Freyja's Fridays - Discovery of Iceland In 872 Ingar Arnarson set sail exploring northward. He found a cold region of land and decided to settle there, and so followed an old custom of throwing the posts from his house door back home, which he had remembered to bring with him, into the currents and where they landed he settled. That place was Reykjavik and the country was of course Iceland.
