Witchy Wednesdays - Larkspur Larkspur is a member of the buttercup family, native to Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean regions. It grows to around 3 feet in height and has bright blue, purple or pink flowers, occasionally they can also be white, they have four petals, two of which are fused at the top and 5 sepals. Four of the sepals look like petals and the fifth looks like a spur extending from the back of the flower. There are an estimated 40 plus species of larkspur currently. Bunches may be hung in a the stable to prevent the animals from theft or predation. Wearing larkspur is said to keep away venomous and toxic animals as well as unfriendly entities. A tincture of the seeds is insecticidal and traditionally used for head lice and body lice. This was once used as a way to treat soldiers of lice. According to Greek mythology, the larkspur sprang from the blood of Ajax, who committed suicide after not being given the armour of the fallen warrior Achilles. If you look at Midsummer's bonfires through larkspur flowers, it is said to strengthen the eyesight. The larkspur generally stands for strong bonds of love, but different colours have different meanings: Pink means fickleness, white means a happy disposition, and purple is first love.
