Witchy Wednesdays - Fennel Fennel is a Perennial herb that grows around 5ft in height and is a member of the carrot family. It has large yellow flowers and whispy leaves and gives off a liqourice smell. the whole of the plant of course is edible. The Roman conquest spread fennel throughout Europe and, by the medieval period, it had gained quite a bit of popularity in England, where it found great usage in monastries. Fennel is rich in vitamin C, Calcium and Potassium. Fennel seed is part of Chinese Five Spice Powder, along with star anise ,peppercorn,cinnamon and cloves and is part of Bengali Panch Phoron along with nigella fenugreek, black mustard seed, and cumin. Fennel pollen can be sprinkled on food to enhance flavor. In the old days, British farmers rubbed a mixture of fennel seeds, soap, and salt on the blade of their plow to strengthen the land and encourage better harvests. Magickally for protection, fennel was hung over the doorway on Midsummer Eve to keep away evil and the seeds put into keyholes to keep out ghosts. Use for scenting soaps and perfumes to ward off negativity and evil. Grow near the home for the same purpose. Carry fennel to influence others to trust your words. Finally At night, place a glass of water in the direct moonlight. Sprinkle powdered nutmeg, grated ginger, dried basil and dried thyme into the glass. Take a large pinch of fennel seeds and put them in. Leave to steep overnight. The next day strain the brew into a clean glass bottle. When dabbed on your intended’s clothes, it will draw them to you.
