Freyja's Fridays - Viking attacks The first attack on Britain was at 793 at the now famous Lindisfarne. From there they attacked Scotland in 794 and Ireland in 795. And it wasn’t only Britain they attacked. In 799 the attacked France and later explored the Mediterranean countries. In 867 a great viking army captured York (in response to the killing of Ragnar Lodbrok, so the sagas tell us) and even repelled attacks to retake the city by the Northumbrian King Aella.
